Sony’s 350,000 square foot Metreon entertainment center, located in San Francisco, is home to movie theaters, interactive attractions, and high-tech shopping galore. It is also home to the Walk of Game, a landmark similar to the Walk of Fame in Hollywood, where gaming industry icons are given a permanent steel star in the walkway. Those honored in the Walk of Game are selected by gamers via an online voting system. Voting for the 2006 inductees has recently concluded.
The new stars have been chosen:
The Lifetime Achievement Awards are given to industry visionaries. Last year’s winners were Atari creator Nolan Bushnell and Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of Mario. Joining them this year are two more gaming greats. Co-founder of Id Software, who defined the FPS genre, John Carmack, and renowned strategy game designer Sid Meier.
The Games / Characters category honors revolutionary games and game characters. Winning this year is the evergreen StarCraft, the first 3D MMORPG EverQuest, the long running Final Fantasy series, and gaming sex symbol Lara Croft.
